Christmas in the Lab

December 16, 2016

Bay City High School POWER SET and WIT hosted their mentees from Cherry Elementary Power GRID and BRT for an evening of fun and exploration with Christmas in the Lab. Sweeny POWER SET and Power GRID also participated in the evening. After taking a picture, the kids traveled through six labs or activities. They made crystallized and glitter ornaments, holiday slime, turned pennies into "gold", crafted a frame for their pictures and played a holiday game. As they left the festive evening, they grabbed a Christmas cupcake on their way out. The POWER SET and WIT 11th and 12th grade mentors organized and ran the event, helping their mentees with each activity. Dr. Fawn Florez and Grace Wuthrich - BCHS teachers ran labs for the event while POWER SET and WIT sponsors Jill Lowry and Angela Baker kept everything running smooth. Students in WIT, POWER SET, BRT and Power GRID all have interests and a high aptitude in the STEM fields and events like these foster these interests. Christmas in the Lab, as well as all the groups - POWER SET, WIT, Power GRID and BRT - would not be possible without support from the Nuclear Power Institute, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station and Lyondellbasell.
